Creativity and Critical Thinking

The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, considered to be the father of Western medicine, said ”Let food be thy medicine”.  Unfortunately, for some, food is poison. What follows are two artifacts: one showing how food can be medicine and one showing how food can be poison.

In my research paper entitled The “Food Swamp” Impact on the Obesity Epidemic in Rural Communities, I have examined the impact of unhealthy food and its contributions to the obesity epidemic in America. In this project I have identified and researched food deserts and food swamps in rural areas, utilizing geospatial mapping and data charts as research tools, and have presented objective quality evidence to educate and promote awareness to address systemic issues. I presented research-based evidence of inequities and social determinants of this epidemic of obesity while avoiding emotional attachment to the subject matter to prevent subjectivity creeping into conclusions.

In contrast, in a witty video, from “Nana Mama Dee’s Soul Food Kitchen”,  I have provided instruction for creating an easy, nutritious, soul satisfying meal, in which I have deconstructed the healthful nutrient content of food ingredients.

These artifacts demonstrate creativity and critical thinking skills which highlight my problem-solving ability, both of which are transferable to personal and professional situations.
